Sleep timer on iPhone: how to make Apple Music, podcasts and YouTube stop on their own

It's 11:40 pm, the third episode is playing, and you're basically gone. In the morning the playlist is still running, the battery is half empty, and last night's spot is somewhere in episode five. A sleep timer fixes that, but not every app has one. Here's which iPhone app has which timer, and how to fill the gap.

Bedside table in lamplight with an iPhone, earbuds and a small alarm clock next to the bed – sleep timer for Apple Music, podcasts and YouTube

The short version

  • The Music app has no sleep timer of its own. Apple Podcasts, YouTube, Apple Books and Spotify have one in the player.
  • For every other app there's the Clock app: set a timer, tap "When Timer Ends" and pick "Stop Playing" at the bottom of the list.
  • The Clock timer stops hard, mid-sentence, and can't be extended from the lock screen.
  • A good sleep timer fades out, offers "end of episode", extends without unlocking and remembers your spot. How we built it into zentr.

Which app has a sleep timer?

The Music app doesn't have one. Apple still hasn't given it a sleep timer, and people have been asking why in Apple's support community for years. The Android version of Apple Music has one; the iPhone version doesn't. Podcasts, videos and audiobooks are better served.

"n/a": not clearly stated in the official description. ¹ YouTube first tested the sleep timer with Premium members in summer 2024 and opened it to everyone in October 2024.

So if you fall asleep to podcasts, YouTube or audiobooks, the timer is right there in the app. If you fall asleep to music or to audio dramas from Apple Music, you need the Clock app or a different player.

The Clock app: a sleep timer for every app

The Clock app has long had a timer that ends playback instead of ringing. Apple's own guide describes it explicitly for falling asleep. It works on any app that plays through the iPhone's media controls, Apple Music included.

Step by step

  1. Start your music, audio drama or video in whichever app you like.
  2. Open the Clock app and tap Timers.
  3. Set a duration, say 30 minutes.
  4. Tap When Timer Ends, scroll to the bottom of the sound list and choose Stop Playing. Confirm with Set.
  5. Tap Start and put the phone down. When the timer runs out, playback pauses.

The choice is remembered. Next time, setting a duration and starting is enough, including through Siri ("set a timer for 30 minutes"). Just remember to switch the timer sound back on before you use it for pasta. Otherwise your kitchen timer stays silent.

Where the Clock timer falls short

  • Hard stop. Playback ends to the second, mid-sentence or mid-chorus. If you're still half awake, that cut is more likely to jolt you than to let you drift off.
  • Extending means unlocking. The lock screen shows the countdown and lets you pause it. For ten more minutes you unlock the phone and set a new timer.
  • It stops whatever is playing. The timer doesn't know apps. Switch from an audio drama to a video halfway through, and it's the video that stops.
  • No "end of episode". You estimate the remaining time yourself. If the episode ends early, autoplay rolls into the next one.
  • Your spot is the app's problem. The Music app doesn't store a position per episode for audio dramas. The next night you hunt for the spot by hand.

Same time every night: a Shortcuts automation

If you listen every evening at 11 pm anyway, an automation saves you from setting a timer at all. It pauses playback at a fixed time, whatever app is playing.

  1. Open Shortcuts, tap Automation at the bottom, then New Automation.
  2. Choose Time of Day, set the time and set repeat to Daily. Pick Run Immediately so the phone doesn't ask first at night.
  3. Add the Play/Pause action from the Media category and set it to Pause.

The downside is obvious. The automation knows the time, not how tired you are. Go to bed early and the episode still runs until 11 pm. For irregular evenings, a timer remains the better choice.

What a good sleep timer should be able to do

From our testers' feedback and from our own nights, we've ended up with a short list. It works as a checklist for any app you fall asleep to.

  • Fade out instead of stopping hard. The last seconds get quieter, so the cut doesn't wake you.
  • Extend without unlocking. One tap on the lock screen, with no Face ID and no opening the app.
  • "End of episode" as an option, and for audio dramas "one more episode". The story then ends where it ends.
  • Remember the position, to the second, per episode and across devices.
  • Durations that fit bedtime. Steps between 15 and 60 minutes cover most evenings.
  • One timer for everything. If you switch between an audio drama, a podcast and a video, you want a timer that comes along.

How we built it into zentr

zentr plays audio dramas from Apple Music, podcasts, your own files and YouTube videos in one queue. Its sleep timer therefore applies to whatever is playing, and it's built along exactly this list.

  • Duration or end: 15 to 90 minutes, until the end of the episode, or after two episodes.
  • Gentle fade: when the timer runs out, zentr turns the volume down over 15 seconds and then pauses.
  • A moment to arrive: if you like, playback only starts after a short breathing pause of 10 seconds to 3 minutes.
  • A moment to arrive: if you like, playback only starts after a short breathing pause of 10 seconds to 3 minutes.
  • Live Activity on the lock screen: see the remaining time and add 15 or 20 minutes with a tap, without unlocking your iPhone.
  • Remembered position: every episode keeps its spot, synced through iCloud across your devices. The next night picks up right there.
  • Optional with Apple Watch: if you fell asleep before the timer did, zentr uses your sleep data from Apple Health to offer a rewind to just before that moment. Every evening with a timer is listed under Last Nights. More in Falling asleep to audio dramas.

What zentr can't do: the timer runs in zentr, not in the Music app, and content from Apple Music needs an active subscription. Spotify can't be added. The timer also has no fixed-time mode; for that, the Shortcuts automation above remains the way.
